Leaders in higher education face unique challenges and barriers that call for a distinctive set of leadership capabilities. This conference session will explore concepts of empathy, vulnerability, and professional courage situated in higher education leadership. Participants will practice key strategies when leading with empathy to help their employees feel heard, valued, and empowered. Through blending research insights, personal stories, and practical exercises, participants will explore empathic listening, staying curious, perspective-taking, power with/to/within, and creating/sustaining a psychologically safe environment.
